Sophia is a town in Raleigh County, West Virginia, United States. It was incorporated in 1912. The population was 1,344 at the 2010 census. Sophia was the hometown of the late U.S. Senator Robert C. Byrd.

In Winter of 2006, Taylor allowed Independence High School senior Brett Hatfield to become "Mayor for the day" for his senior project. In this event, Hatfield became a fifth generation mayor of the town, as one of his great-great-great-great grandfathers was the town's original mayor. The event was covered twice in local newspaper, The Register-Herald. In his brief time in office, Hatfield created a brand new logo for the town.
