Sheepwash was originally the more rural part of the township and civil parish of Ashington and Sheepwash within Bothal ancient parish. In 1896 Ashington and Sheepwash was split with the more built-up part, Ashington, becoming an urban district. Sheepwash remained as a somewhat more rural civil parish in the Morpeth Rural District until 1935 when it was absorbed into Ashington.
