A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Sharperton from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:

"SHARPERTON, a township in Alwinton parish, Northumberland; on the river Coquet, 6½ miles N W by W of Rothbury. Acres: 971. Population: 92. Houses: 18.

Sharperton was a township in the ancient parish of Alwinton and became a separate civil parish in 1866. From 1894 it was part of Rothbury Rural District. In 1955 the civil parish was abolished and the area was absorbed into the parish of Harbottle.
