Saluda is a town in Polk County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 575 at the 2000 census. It is a very quiet country mountain town, sitting at the top of the steepest regular gauge railroad line east of the Rocky Mountains. It has seen a raft of improvements along its main street since 1995 or so with new restaurants and art galleries opening. Summer and fall weekends find Saluda filled with tourists and cyclists. The town festival is named Coon Dog Day, after raccoon hunting dogs. It features a beauty pageant in which the lucky winner is dubbed Coon Dog Day Queen. Also, area children compete in contests for the title 'Coon Dog Prince/Princess' (one of each), and a local boy is chosen as Coon Dog King. Research Tips
