A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Ryal from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:

"RYALL, a township in Stamfordham parish, Northumberland; on the river Pont, 8 miles N E of Hexham. Acres: 2,189. Population: 101. Houses: 18. There is an old chapel of ease."

Ryal was a township in the ancient parish of Stamfordham and became a separate civil parish in 1866. In 1955 the civil parish was abolished and the area was absorbed into the parish of Matfen.
