A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Redmere from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:

"REDMORE, a quondam extra-parochial tract in Hock-wold-cum-Wilton parish, Norfolk; on the Little Ouse river, 9½ miles W N W of Brandon. Population: 14."

GENUKI states that it was one of the settlements from which the parish of Little Ouse was formed in 1866. The area is about 17 miles south of King's Lynn on the Cambridgeshire border with Norfolk.

Redmere was made into a one-parish rural district for the year 1894-1895, but A Vision of Britain through Time does not give any information on the destination of the parish in 1895. Part of Redmere was also in the county of the Isle of Ely, now Cambridgeshire.

Research tips

  • Ancestry.co.uk has the following lists as of 2018 (UK or worldwide Ancestry membership or library access required). With the exception of the index to wills these files are browsible images of the original documents. The files are separated by type and broken down into time periods (i.e., "Baptism, Marriages, and Burials, 1535-1812" is more than one file). The general explanatory notes are worth reading for those unfamiliar with English parish records.
