Queens County was shired in 1556 by Queen Mary as Queen's County, covering the countries of Leix, Slewmarge, Irry, and that part of Glimnaliry on the southwest side of the River Barrow. The county was known as Queen's County (Irish: Contae na Banríona) until its name was informally changed to County Laois on establishment of the Irish Free State in 1922.
