Putnam County, founded in 1848 is a county located in the U.S. state of West Virginia. The name is in honor of Israel Putnam, who was a hero in the French and Indian War and a general in the American Revolutionary War. As of the 2010 census, the population was 55,486. Its county seat is Winfield.

Putnam County is part of the Charleston, WV metropolitan area, with a 2011 Census population estimate of 303,674 people.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of , of which is land and (1.19%) is water.
