Preston le Skerne is now a hamlet in the civil parish of Mordon, County Durham, in England. It is situated a short distance to the east of Newton Aycliffe. This transfer to Mordon civil parish took place after 1974.
Preston le Skerne was originally a township in the ancient parish of Aycliffe in County Durham. It became a separate civil parish in 1866. From 1894 it was part of Sedgefield Rural District. Between 1974 and 2009 it became part of the larger Sedgefield non-metropolitan district. Since 2009 County Durham has been a unitary authority.
A nineteenth century description
A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Preston le Skerne from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:
- "PRESTON-LE-SKERNE, a township in Aycliffe parish, Durham; on the river Skerne, and on the Stockton and Bishop-Auckland railway, adjacent to its intersection of the North eastern railway, 6¼ miles N N E of Darlington. Acres: 2,610. Real property: £1,811. Population: 146. Houses: 25."
