Nestled in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains, Port Allegany is a town with tree lined streets. The headwaters of the Allegheny River are located 30 miles east.

The Allegheny River provided a means of transport through the community. Historically, Port Allegany was a traveling point in pioneer days when travelers coming overland from the Susquehanna River would continue by boat. Originally, known as Canoe Place, the town’s name was changed to Port Allegany in 1838. Lumber and tanning industries grew as a result of the river and then the railways. In the 1800s natural gas was discovered which led to the expansion of industries including glass firms, chemical plants, cheese factories, machine shops, brick plants, sawmills, planing mills, tanneries and furniture factories.

Today, Port Allegany is best known for its glass manufacturing, Pittsburgh Corning Corporation, which is the only producer of glass blocks in the United States, and Saint-Gobain Containers, which is a producer of glass containers.
