Petworth Rural District was formed in 1894 following the passing of the Local Government Act of that year. It was located in the northwest sector of the county. In 1974 the whole of the Rural District existing at that time became part of the Chichester District in West Sussex.

The rural district was originally made up of three large parishes in the north and some very small ones (one with four detached sections) in the south. Starting in 1933 the small parishes were merged with their neighbours and two of the northern parishes were separated into two parts each. The individual changes are noted in the table below.
