[edit] Research TipsBefore 1785 Northwestern South Carolina was claimed by both South Carolina and Georgia. Land was granted from Washington County, Georgia 1783-1785. Pendleton County was part of the Ninety-Six District 1789 - 1795 and Washington District 1795 - 1800.
After the Washington Judicial District was discontinued, it was known as the Pendleton District. The present day counties of Oconee, Pickens and Anderson make up the area of former Pendleton District. It's referred to as "The Golden Corner". Before the Revolutionary War the Cherokee Indians inhabited this area. After the war, large land grants were given to Revolutionary War Soldiers. Some partitioned the land to settlers and moved on, while others stayed. |
