A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Pen llin from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:
- "PENLLINE, a parish in Bridgend [registration] district, Glamorgan; 2 miles W N W of Cowbridge [railway] station. It has a post-office under Cowbridge. Acres: 1,784. Real property: £2,384. Population: 286. Houses: 74. [Penlline] Castle stands on an eminence; belonged to successively the Turbervilles, the Stradlings, and the Mansels; is now the seat of J. Homfray, Esq.; and retains some Norman features. The living is a [perpetual] curacy, annexed to the vicarage of Llanfrinach, in the diocese of Llandaff. The church is old."
A Vision of Britain through Time also provided the list of administrations to which it has belonged. There was no article found in Wikipedia, possibly because of the variety in the spelling possibilities.
GENUKI, in its gazetteer, gives co-ordinates both for the castle and for "the houses". The settlement is named Graig Penllyn.
Research Tips
- GENUKI on Glamorgan Lots of leads to other sources and descriptions of former parishes.
- The FamilySearch Wiki on Glamorgan has recently been updated (early 2016) and looks remarkably like Wikipedia. Their map "Glamorgan Parish Map.jpg" enlarges to show all the original parishes. The sub-section "Parishes of Historic Glamorgan" lists all the parishes of Glamorgan and the newer preserved counties and principal areas in both English and Welsh. (Currently this website is still under construction.)
