Owlerton is a suburb of Sheffield Metropolitan Area. It lies northwest of the city centre near the confluence of the River Don and River Loxley. Owlerton was formerly a small rural settlement with its origins in the Early Middle Ages, it became part of Sheffield in the early 1900s as the city expanded. Owlerton stands just east of the adjacent suburb of Hillsborough and the division between the two districts is difficult to delineate.

Owlerton was part of the large ecclesiastical and civil parish of Ecclesfield. There may be more information under Ecclesfield.
