Monken Hadley was an ancient parish on the northern edge of Middlesex. When county councils were created in 1889 it was transferred to Hertfordshire. In 1894 the parish was split, with a new parish of Hadley being created from it. This became part of Barnet Urban District, whilst the remainder of Monken Hadley became a parish within East Barnet Urban District in Hertfordshire. East Barnet Urban District was abolished in 1965 and incorporated into Greater London.

Monken Hadley is now part of the London Borough of Barnet. It is now a suburban development immediately north of the town of Barnet on the very edge of Greater London and 11 miles (18 km) north north-west of the central point of Charing Cross. It retains much of its rural character.

History

On 14 April 1471 near Barnet, then a small town in Hertfordshire north of London,Edward IV led the House of York in a fight against the House of Lancaster, which backed Henry VI for the throne. Leading the Lancastrian army was Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick, who played a crucial role in the fate of each king. Historians regard the battle as one of the most important clashes in the Wars of the Roses, since it brought about a decisive turn in the fortunes of the two houses. Edward's victory was followed by 14 years of Yorkist rule over England.
