Nordmøre is one of three districts in Møre og Romsdal. The region is a former bailiwick (fogderi), and historically it had strong ties to Nidaros. Since the administrative structure changed and Møre og Romsdal county (1689-1919 Romsdals amt, 1919-1935 Møre fylke) was formed, the district is no longer a formal entity, but culturally and linguistically it is still a distinct and defined area. The dialect clearly differs from those of Romsdal and Sunnmøre.

Although there is no official centre in the district, Kristiansund is the largest town and serves as an unofficial "capital"
