Newton Purcell is a village which since 1932 has been located in the civil parish of Newton Purcell with Shelswell in Oxfordshire, England, 4.5 miles (7 km) southeast of Brackley in neighbouring Northamptonshire. According to the UK census of 2001 the population of Newton Purcell with Shelswell was 103. This makes an interesting comparison with the population of Newton Purcell alone for 1871 (as given below).
A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Newton Purcell from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:
- "NEWTON-PURCELL, a parish in Bicester [registration] district, Oxford; adjacent to Bucks, 4¼ miles S W by W of Buckingham [railway] station. Post-town: Buckingham. Acres: 593. Real property: £986. Population: 105. Houses: 27. The manor belongs to J. H. S. Harrison, Esq. The living is a rectory, united with the [perpetual] curacy of Shelswell, in the diocese of Oxford. Value: £300. Patron: J. H. S. Harrison, Esq. The church is ancient; has a Norman doorway, now closed up with brick-work; has also a bell-turret; and was extensively repaired in 1810."
