NOTE: There are three Newbiggins in Northumberland, one in County Durham, three in Westmorland and one in the North Riding of Yorkshire. All have been renamed to indicate their location.

A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Newbiggin by Newburn from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:

"NEWBIGGIN, a township in Newburn parish, Northumberland; 3¾ miles N W of Newcastle. Acres: 519. Population: 51. Houses: 9."

Newbiggin was originally a township in the ancient parish of Newburn, Northumberland. It became a separate civil parish in 1866. From 1894 it was part of Castle Ward Rural District. In 1955 it was abolished and absorbed into Woolsington, the neighbouring parish to the north.
