Naruna is a town that sprang up along the Lynchburg & Durham division of the Norfolk & Western Railroad. In 1923, it became home of the Smith-Hughes Agricultural School, built by the state for instruction of vocational agriculture and home economics.

The neighborhood is historically associated with apiary concerns (honeybees).
