Mendota is an unincorporated village in Washington County in the southwestern part of the U.S. state of Virginia, at an elevation of approximately 1800 feet. There is a medical clinic there, a post office, two churches and several residences, but no market or gas station. The nearest major city is Bristol. Mendota is widely recognized as the 'Hawk Capital of the World, and it lives up to its name.

The name Mendota is Native American for "bend in the river"; the village is located on the north folk of the Holston River. At least five different Native American tribes once fished this fork and hunted the surrounding grounds.

It is part of the KingsportBristol (TN)Bristol (VA) Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is a component of the Johnson City–Kingsport–Bristol, TN-VA Combined Statistical Area – commonly known as the "Tri-Cities" region.
