Melford Rural District was a rural district in the administrative county of West Suffolk, England and the historic county of Suffolk. It was created in 1894, under the Local Government Act 1894 from that part of the Sudbury Rural Sanitary District which also was in charge of parishes in northern Essex. (The Essex portion became Belchamp Rural District in Essex). The rural district was named after the parish of Long Melford but administered from the town of Sudbury.

On 1 April 1935 it lost the parishes of Cavendish and Hawkedon to Clare Rural District. At the same time Glemsford was abolished as an urban district and added to the Melford Rural District. Since 1 April 1974 it has formed part of the District of Babergh in Suffolk. East and West Suffolk were abolished on 1 April 1974.

Research Tips

  • A map of Suffolk from 1900 provided online by A Vision of Britain Through Time (University of Portsmouth Department of Geography) can be enlarged to view individual parishes. Careful inspection will usually lead to the discovery of smaller hamlets founded before 1900. The rural districts (marked with their names printed in blue) are those in existence in 1900, not those introduced in 1934. The more ancient hundreds are marked in red. Most (but not all) parish names are underlined in red.
