the following text is based on an article in Wikipedia

Melford Rural District was a rural district in the administrative county of West Suffolk, England and the historic county of Suffolk. It was created in 1894, under the Local Government Act 1894 from that part of the Sudbury Rural Sanitary District in Suffolk (the rest becoming Belchamp Rural District in Essex).

On 1 April 1935 it lost the parishes of Cavendish and Hawkedon to Clare Rural District. At the same time Glemsford was abolished as an urban district and added to the Melford Rural District which was named after Long Melford and administered from the town of Sudbury.

Since 1 April 1974 it has formed part of the District of Babergh in Suffolk. East and West Suffolk were abolished on 1 April 1974.
