From the Gazetteer for Scotland:
- "A western suburb of Dumfries in Dumfries and Galloway, Maxwelltown lies to the west of the River Nith. Created in 1810 as a separate Burgh of Barony, in the old county of Kirkcudbrightshire, it became part of Dumfries in 1928. Buildings of interest include Dumfries Mill, now the Burns Heritage Centre, Dumfries Museum and observatory, the Sinclair Memorial, the former Dominican Convent of St. Benedict, the Sheriff Court, Dumfries Prison, the former Maxwelltown Court House and Palmerston Park, the home ground of Queen of the South Football Club."
Maxwelltown was located in the parish of Terregles in the former County of Kirkcudbrightshire in southwest Scotland. This area is now part of the unitary authority called the Dumfries & Galloway Council Area.
