Marshall is a historic unincorporated town in Fauquier County, Virginia. Marshall was originally known as Salem. The town became Marshall after a short-lived incorporation. Marshall is named after John Marshall, the former United States Supreme Court Chief Justice. Both Virginia Rte 55 and Rte 17 run through it. I-66 also passes through the town. Although Marshall has historically been an agricultural community, sprawl from the metropolitan Washington, D.C. area has let to a recent demographic change, as there are a number of commuters who work in the D.C. area. Marshall is in the heart of Virginia hunt country. Marshall is home to Marshall Middle School which is unique among the schools in Fauquier County because it follows the schedule for the elementary rather than the secondary schools. It has a different bell schedule as well. Marshall also is home to the One Room School House PS17 which was the last one room to close in the 1960s.
