Longdendale Urban District was established in 1936 and absorbed Mottram in Longdendale Urban District and other neighbouring urban districts and civil parishes. It was transferred into the Metropolitan Borough of Tameside in 1974.

Inside Tameside, the area is known as "Mottram in Longdendale" or, simply, "Mottram". This is probably to differentiate it from the Vale of Longdendale which is in Derbyshire.

GENUKI provides the following information

Longdendale was a civil parish created in 1936 by uniting the whole of Hollingworth and Mottram in Longdendale with parts of Hattersley and Matley. The population was 4,591 in 1951, and 9,733 in 2001.
