Leyland is now a town in the South Ribble district, in the county of Lancashire, England. It is approximately six miles (10 km) south of the city of Preston. The name of the town is of old Anglo-Saxon origin, meaning "untilled land".

Throughout the 20th and 21st century, the community has seen a large growth in industry, population and farming, due to the establishment of Leyland Motors, housing developments and the surrounding usable arable land.

Before 1974 Leyland was an urban district situated on the border betwenn Preston Rural District and Chorley Rural District. Prior to 1894 it was a sub-district of Chorley Registration District and Poor Law Union and, before it became a civil parish in 1866, it was a township in Leyland ancient parish in Leyland Hundred.
