GENUKI provides the following notes on the Church of England churches in the city of Leicester.

Leicester anciently had only 6 parishes:

  • Saint Mary's (north of the Newarke--a street in the middle of the city),
  • All Saints' (in High Cross street),
  • Saint Leonard's (destroyed in 1645),
  • Saint Margaret's (by Sanvey Gate),
  • Saint Martin's Collegiate (Town Hall Lane), and
  • Saint Nicholas (said to be the oldest church in Leicester).

A Vision of Britain through Time describes Leicester St. Mary as an ancient parish and a civil parish (until 1896) when the civil parishes which were formerly ecclesiastical parishes were all absorbed into the County Borough of Leicester.

Its formal name is the Church of St. Mary de Castro or St. Mary of the Castle--the church is adjacent to the ruins of Leicester Castle. See also Leicester the Castle View.
