Leavening has been since 1974 a village and a civil parish in the Ryedale District in North Yorkshire, south of Malton and about 12 miles from the city of York.

Prior to the nationwide municipal reorganization of 1974, Leavening was located in Norton Rural District. It was made a civil parish in 1866. Historically, it was located in the ecclesiastical parish of Acklam in the Buckrose Wapentake.
