From The Stewartry of Kirkcudbright Monumental Inscriptions pre-1855, volume 5, by Alison Mitchell:

"The very small parish church was first recorded in the 15th century. By 1654 it was deserted when the parish united with that of Twynholm, but the burial ground beside the ruin continued in use. The compact steep site is a good vantage point from which to look across the water to the burgh of Kirkcudbright. It was here in 1758 that Robert Paterson's 12 year old son Walter traced his father, "Old Mortality", after his disappearance from his home in Balmaclellan. The ground is kept in good condition after many years of neglect, but headstones may have fallen and been removed.
"The nearby hamlet, now almost a suburb of Kirkcudbright, is named The Stell, after an 18th century distillery there which later became a cotton factory."

Kirkchrist was located in the parish of Twynholm in the former County of Kirkcudbrightshire in southwest Scotland. This area is now part of the unitary authority called the Dumfries & Galloway Council Area.
