Alvie (Scottish Gaelic: Albhaidh) is a small crofting hamlet and civil parish, located on the south shore of Loch Alvie in the Badenoch and Strathspey area within the Highland Council Area of Scotland (formerly Inverness-shire).
Alvie is a parish, which lies in Highland Council Area, some 6 miles (9 km) south of Aviemore and 8 miles (13 km) east of Kingussie. Prior to 1975 the parish was part of the combined parish of Cromdale Inverallan and Alvie which was formally situated in Moray rather than Inverness-shire. When Inverness-shire and Moray were abolished in 1975, the joint parish broke into its component parts. Alvie became part of the Highland Region and in 1996 by the unitary authority named the Highland Council Area. Geographically it had always been in Inverness-shire. The parish has an area of 353.6 sq. km (136.5 sq. miles). It included the settlements of Alvie, the seat of Dunachton, Balavil, Delfour, Kincraig, Lagganlia, Lynchat and Lynwilg. For a 19th century description of the parish, see the description from The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland (1868) as transcribed and copyrighted by Colin Hinson and provided on the web by GENUKI.
