Covered an area to the north of the parishes of Clerkenwell and St. Luke Old Street which was gradually increasing in population through the 19th century. After being transferred to the County of London in 1889 there were many boundary changes to the registration district as the new "metropolitan boroughs" became established. The aim was that each metropolitan borough would have its own registration district.
