Ypres is a Belgian municipality located in the Flemish province of West Flanders. Though Ieper is the Dutch and only official name, The French Ypres is most commonly used in English due to its role in WWI, when Belgian maps still named Flemish cities only by their French name. The municipality comprises the city of Ypres and the villages of Boezinge, Brielen, Dikkebus, Elverdinge, Hollebeke, Sint-Jan, Vlamertinge, Voormezele, Zillebeke, and Zuidschote. Together, they count some 34,900 inhabitants.

During World War I, Ypres was the centre of intense and sustained battles between the German and the Allied forces. During the war, due to it being hard to pronounce in English, British troops nicknamed the city "Wipers". Historical town in West-Flanders, Belgium (Europe). Called "Ieper"[1]" in dutch. Was completely distroyed under World war I and rebuilded almost in the same old style. The "Lakenhalle" is one of the biggest civil buildings of this period in Western Europe. Only a few houses were saved from the bombs. The Biebuycks house (builded in 1544) is one of them.--Biebuyck 17:17, 15 July 2008 (EDT)
