Colbury was a civil parish located near Southampton in Hampshire from 1894 until 1934. Prior to 1894 it was a tything and a manor in Eling parish. After 40 years of being a separate civil parish in New Forest Rural District, it was abolished with more than 85% of its area going to Denny Lodge parish and the remainder returning to Eling.
Since 1932, and possibly since 1974, part of the area which returned to Eling has been renamed as Ashurst and Colbury. Hounsdown which is closer to Eling is still considered part of Eling parish.
Ashurst
- the text in this section is based on an article in Wikipedia
Ashurst is a village in the New Forest District of Hampshire. Together with Colbury hamlet it now makes the parish of Ashurst and Colbury. Ashurst is on the A35 road near the Southampton conurbation. According to the 2001 census the parish had a population of 2,011. The parish is on the edge of the designated New Forest National Park area. The parish is bounded to the west by Netley Marsh parish and the Bartley Water, to the north by the A326 road and Totton and Eling, and to the south by Denny Lodge parish in the New Forest.
Ashurst is close to the City of Southampton and is often considered an exurb (commuter town) of it, a large percentage of its population being commuters.
