Helston Rural District was a local government division of Cornwall, England between 1894 and 1934. Established under the Local Government Act 1894, the rural district was abolished in 1934 to create Camborne–Redruth Urban District and Kerrier Rural District, as well as enlarging Helston Municipal Borough. Helston Rural District stretched from the tip of the Lizard Peninsula in the south to the edge of the town of Camborne in the north. Its landward boundaries east and west were Constantine parish in East Kerrier Rural District and Perranuthnoe, St. Hilary and St. Erth parishes in West Penwith Rural District and Gwinear parish in Redruth Rural District.

The rural district covered a very large area and providing a map dedicated to it is difficult. A map from a 1900 Ordnance Survey Series provided by A Vision of Britain through Time blows up to show all the parishes and many of the small villages and hamlets.

The map on the right illustrates the parishes on The Lizard Peninsula, the southern part of Helston Rural District.

During its existence Helston Rural District was made up of the civil parishes given below. When it was abolished in 1934 the parishes were transferred to various other boroughs, urban districts and rural districts as shown below:

  • Breage (part to Helston Municipal Borough in 1934; part to Kerrier Rural District in 1934)
  • Crowan (to Kerrier Rural District in 1934)
  • Cury (to Kerrier Rural District in 1934)

From Wikipedia

"Rural districts were a type of local government area – now superseded – established at the end of the 19th century in England, Wales, and Ireland for the administration of predominantly rural areas at a level lower than that of the administrative counties."
"In England and Wales they were created in 1894 (by the Local Government Act 1894) along with urban districts. They replaced the earlier system of sanitary districts (themselves based on Poor Law Unions, but not replacing them)."
"Rural districts had elected Rural District Councils (RDCs), which inherited the functions of the earlier sanitary districts, but also had wider authority over matters such as local planning, council housing, and playgrounds and cemeteries. Matters such as education and roads were the responsibility of county councils."
"Until 1930 the rural district councillors were also poor law guardians for the unions of which they formed part. Each civil parish was represented by one or more councillors."

In 1974 the districts and boroughs were abolished and today Cornwall is a unitary authority.
