Hellington is a hamlet and civil parish in the District of South Norfolk of the English county of Norfolk. In the 2001 UK census, it contained 24 households and a population of 69. In the 2011 census its population (if it remained under 100) would have been added to that of a neighbouring parish (probably Rockland St. Mary).

It is centred on a crossroads 0.5 mile (0.8 km) south of Rockland St. Mary and around 6 1⁄2 miles (10.5 km) southeast of Norwich.

The church, St John the Baptist, is one of 124 existing round-tower churches in Norfolk, and is a Grade I listed building. Hellington Hall is a Grade II listed 17th-century country house.

A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Hellington from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1871-72:

"HILLINGTON, or HELLINGTON, a parish in Loddon [registration] district, Norfolk; 3½ miles SW by W of Buckenham [railway] station, and 4 NW of Loddon. Post town: Rockland, under Norwich. Acres: 516. Real property: £969. Population: 98. Houses: 20. The property is divided among a few. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Norwich. Value: £126. Patron: W. A. Gilbert, Esq. The church is ancient but good; and has a circular tower, with Norman arcade. Charities £7."

It is noted that 19th century censuses are not listed under Sources. Note that Hellington (perhaps written Hillington) was part of the Loddon Registration District and it may be possible to browse in the Registration District volumes, online on pay sites, to find the parish. In the 1861 census Hellington was District 8 in Loddon District. Other census years have not been checked.

  • Ancestry.co.uk has the following lists as of 2018 (UK or worldwide Ancestry membership or library access required). With the exception of the index to wills these files are browsible images of the original documents. The files are separated by type and broken down into time periods (i.e., "Baptism, Marriages, and Burials, 1535-1812" is more than one file). The general explanatory notes are worth reading for those unfamiliar with English parish records.
