A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Hedworth Monkton and Jarrow from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:

"HEDWORTH, MONKTON, AND JARROW, a township in Jarrow parish, Durham; extending from Hedworth on the Newcastle and Sunderland railway, north by eastward, to Jarrow on the Tyne. Hedworth itself is 3¼ miles SSW of South Shields. Acres of the township: 2,826; of which 476 are water. Real property of Hedworth alone: £2,972; of Monkton and Jarrow: £22,012; of which £1,500 are in mines and £4,000 in quarries. Population of the township, in 1851: 3,835; in 1861: 6,494. Houses: 909. The increase of pop. was caused by the extension of the iron ship building trade." See Jarrow.

Hedworth Monkton and Jarrow was a township in the ancient parish of Jarrow. It became a separate civil parish in 1866. In 1894 the civil parish and township were both abolished and the area was absorbed into the parishes of Hebburn, Jarrow and Monkton. (Source: A Vision of Britain through Time)
