When Harpenden became an urban district, its more rural sections, mostly to the west of its centre, became Harpenden Rural parish and continued to be part of St. Albans Rural District. There were several adjustments of its boundaries through the period 1898 to 1837, particularly a large acreage transferred to Harpenden in 1935.
