NOTE: There is another, much smaller, Hampton in the county of Kent. They should not be confused.

Hampton is one of the "ancient parishes" of Middlesex. It became an Urban District in 1894. In 1934 it was absorbed into Twickenham Urban District. In 1965 Twickenhame itself became part of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames in Greater London.

the following text is based on an article in Wikipedia

The Anglo-Saxon parish of Hampton which converted to secular use in the 19th century included present-day Hampton, Hampton Wick, Hampton Hill, and the hamlet of Hampton Court surrounding Hampton Court Palace. Together are called The Hamptons. [Places in italics are redirected here.]

Hampton is a suburban area with an old village heart on the north bank of the River Thames, in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames in Greater London, England. The population is between 19,000 and 20,000, excluding the fluctuating ward encasing its near neighbour Hampton Hill which also has a high street. Hampton includes the parkside neighbourhood of Hampton Court. It is served by two railway stations, excluding the one north of Hampton Hill, but including one south of Hampton Court Bridge.

It adjoins Bushy Park on two sides and is west of Hampton Wick and Kingston upon Thames. It has long strips of public riverside and residential islands in the Thames.
