A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Greys Forest from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:

"GREYS FOREST, a township in Kirknewton parish, Northumberland; 6 miles WNW of Wooler. Acres: 6,615. Population: 39. house, 7."

Greys Forest was a township in the ancient parish of Kirknewton and became a separate civil parish in 1866. From 1894 until 1955 the parish was part of Glendale Rural District. In 1955 the civil parish was abolished and the area was absorbed back into the parish of Kirknewton.
