Margate is a seaside town in the District of Thanet in the northeast of Kent, England. It lies northeast of Canterbury, on the coast along the North Foreland, and contains the areas of Garlinge, Cliftonville, Palm Bay and Westbrook. (All these settlements are redirected here.) The parish church is Margate St. John the Baptist which was located in another suburb of Margate called Northdown (redirected to Margate St. John the Baptist).

Margate was incorporated as a municipal borough in 1857. In 1935 it was greatly expanded by absorbing not only the villages above but Birchington and Westgate on Sea as well. The municipal borough status was abolished in 1974, since which date Margate has been part of the Thanet District of Kent.

The Thanet District was so named after the former island where it is located. What is now the large promontory stretching into the North Sea from the Thames Estuary was once detached from the mainland but the main channel separating it silted up to a point where navigation was impossible sometime in the 18th century. Margate is the principal urban settlement on the former Isle of Thanet and had a population of 61,223 in the UK census of 2011.

Garlinge

Garlinge is a village in the suburbs of Margate in Kent, England, situated 2 km southwest of the centre of the town. Since 1974 it has been in the Thanet local government district. At the 2011 UK census, the Garlinge electoral ward had a population of 4,849.

Garlinge was made a civil parish in 1894 and was located in the Isle of Thanet Rural District. It absorbed parts of the parishes of St. Peter Extra and Northdown (both to the south of Garlinge) when they were abolished in 1913-1914, but in 1935 the parish was absorbed into Margate municipal borough.

Cliftonville

Westbrook is a Victorian seaside resort on the Thanet peninsula in the southeast corner of England. It is part of the ribbon development of the north Kent coast between Westgate-on-Sea to the west and Margate to the east.

• Ordnance Survey Maps of England and Wales - Revised: Kent illustrates the parish boundaries of Kent when rural districts were still in existence and before Greater London came into being. The map publication year is 1931. An earlier map of 1900 may also be useful. The maps blow up to show all the parishes and many of the small villages and hamlets. Maps in this series are now downloadable for personal use.
• Census records for Kent are available on FamilySearch, Ancestry and FindMyPast. The first site is free; the other two are pay sites but have access to microfilmed images. Steve Archer produced a very useful round-up of the available sources, but this information may not be up to date.

• Volume 2 of the Victoria County History of Kent (published 1926) is available online through the auspices of British History Online. It includes accounts of the early history of Canterbury and Rochester cathedrals, and of several sites now within the conurbation of London.
• Volume 3 of the Victoria County History of Kent (published 1932) This includes the text of, and the index to, the Kent Domesday survey. It has been provided by the Kent Archaeological Society.
