Gainesville is a town in Wyoming County, New York. The population was 2,333 at the 2000 census. The town is named after General Edmund P. Gaines.

The Town of Gainesville was established in 1814 from part of the Town of Warsaw. The original name was "Hebe." The Town of Gainesville is the birthplace of David Starr Jordan, the first president of Stanford University.
