According to English Jurisdictions (see Durham References below) St. Oswald's was a parish extending to the south and west from Durham Cathedral in the centre of the city of Durham. It also included a detached part to the northeast.

The ancient parish included the townships of

St. Oswald's was a chapelry until the 12th century, an ancient parish from the 12th century until 1866, and then a civil parish. It was part of Chester Ward until 1829 when Durham Ward was formed. The civil parish was absorbed into the City of Durham civil parish and municipal borough in 1935.
