Dockenfield Rural District was made up of only one civil parish and lasted only one year. Until 1894 the parish had been located in Hampshire, but allied to the parish of Frensham which was in Surrey. In 1894 Dockenfield was transferred to Surrey and became a single-parish rural district.

In 1895 the rural district was abolished and the parish was transferred to Farnham Rural District where it remained until 1933 when it was transferred again to Hambledon Rural District. Since 1974 Dockenfield has been a civil parish in the non-metropolitan Waverley District.
