Dale Town in 1870-72 was a township 9½ miles northeast of Thirsk with an area of more than 3000 acres and a population of 60 in 10 houses. (Source: A Vision of Britain through Time)

Prior to the nationwide municipal reorganization of 1974, Dale Town was part of Helmsley Rural District. Historically, it was located in the ecclesiastical parish of Hawnby in the Birdforth Wapentake.
