Crucornau Fawr came into existence as a civil parish in 1935 when it replaced the parish of Llanvihangel Crucorney. The parish had a population of 1,201 in the UK census of 2011.

A Welsh-English vocabulary list states that "Fawr" means "great". The place name could therefore be translated "Great Crucornau".
