A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Crawbrook from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:

"CRAWCROOK [sic], a township in Ryton parish, Durham; on the river Tyne, and the Newcastle and Carlisle railway, 7½ miles W of Gateshead. Acres: 1,158; of which 23 are water. Real property: £1,954. Population: 319. Houses: 71. Coal is worked."

Crawbrook was a township in the ancient parish of Ryton. It became a separate civil parish in 1866. From 1894 until 1914 it was a parish within the urban district of Ryton. In 1914 the civil parish was abolished and the area was absorbed into the parish of Ryton.
