Coigach was the most northern of the peninsulas making up the large parish of Lochbroom in the traditional county of Ross and Cromarty which existed until 1975. The area is now part of the Highland Council Area.

Prior to 1890 Cromartyshire and Ross-shire were separate counties. Unusually, Cromartyshire was made up of several detached areas scattered through the northern half of Ross-shire. In 1890 an act of the United Kingdom Parliament joined Cromartyshire and Ross-shire into one county named Ross and Cromarty. Coigach was the largest of the detached sections of Cromartyshire.
