Clare Rural District was a rural district in the historic county of Suffolk and the administrative county of West Suffolk, England. It was created in 1894. On 1 April 1935 it was enlarged by the addition of the parishes of Lidgate and Ousden from the disbanded Moulton Rural District, Cavendish and Hawkedon from the Melford Rural District and Depden from the Thingoe Rural District. It was named after and administered from the town of Clare. It covers the most southwestern corner of Suffolk.

Rural districts were disbanded in 1974 and the area covered by Clare Rural District became part of the Borough or District of St. Edmundsbury which was a "district municipality". The counties of East Suffolk and West Suffolk ceased to exist as of 1 April 1974 and Suffolk is now the administrative county as it was before 1888.

In 2019 St. Edmundisbury District was replaced by the West Suffolk District which also covered the Forest Heath District in the northwest corner of Suffolk.

Research Tips

  • A map of Suffolk from 1900 provided online by A Vision of Britain Through Time (University of Portsmouth Department of Geography) can be enlarged to view individual parishes. Careful inspection will usually lead to the discovery of smaller hamlets founded before 1900. The rural districts (marked with their names printed in blue) are those in existence in 1900, not those introduced in 1934. The more ancient hundreds are marked in red. Most (but not all) parish names are underlined in red.
