The City of Chelmsford is a local government district in Essex, England, named after its main settlement, Chelmsford, which is also the county town of Essex. City status was granted on 1 June 2012 Chelmsford to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II. The current district was formed on 1 April 1974 from the municipal borough of Chelmsford, and most of the Chelmsford Rural District. The total population of the area covered by the borough is 168,500 (estimate based on the 2011 UK census). Approximately 60,000 live in the city and over 42,400 in the surrounding suburban and semi-rural parishes. [edit] BoundariesTo the northwest it borders the Uttlesford District and to the northeast the boundary is with the Braintree District. It shares its eastern border with the Maldon District and to the southeast its borders the Rochford District, to the south the Basildon District and to the southwest it the Brentwood Borough.
