• "CHARLEVOIX, a county in the north-east part of Quebec, having the St. Lawrence for its southern boundary. Area 1,233.000 acres. Capital, St. Paul's Bay. Pop. in 1871, 19,038."

Research Tips

In 1858, the county of Charlevoix was divided into two separate county municipalities, First Municipal Division of the County of Charlevoix and Second Municipal Division of the County of Charlevoix. "Whereas the County of Charlevoix, in the the District of Saguenay, is of very great extent, and is divided by mountains, hills, and roads which are exceedingly difficult to travel, and comprises an island which is separated from the mainland by a large expanse of water, and it is therefore expedient to divide the said County into two County Municipalities, and to leave the Isle-aux-Coudres forming the Parish of St. Louis, as a single Parish Municipality, not attached to any County Municipality" [S1]
